Building the City
Although the Barbican Estate was completed in the 1960s, the City beyond is constantly re-emerging. There is never a day where a crane cannot be seen from one of my balcony views. The paintings below were inspired by the cranes that popped up above the Barbican Estate when 160 Aldersgate Street was under construction. The two smaller works on reversed, recycled palette papers illustrate my process of palimpsest which can be seen across this website. I have shown fronts and backs below to demonstrate how I employ the colour and light from a previous work in creating a new work. In this way, many of my works are "related" to each other. I am not merely painting the city being built beyond the Barbican Estate: I am building the works out of recycled palette papers and recycled paint. Just as the City is constantly re-emerging and re-utilising its financial resources, so too am I creatively recycling the resources at my disposal. One of these is the weekend supplement of the Financial Times which I buy for Jackie Wullschlager's brilliant art’s reviews.
